SUMMARY:Big Gay BBQ™ 5: Rainbow Nation
DESCRIPTION:Welcome back to our FIFTH instalment of the annual Big Gay BBQ™! We are delighted by the ever growing support and excitement for this event year after year. \nThe Big Gay BBQ™ is intended to raise awareness for International Day Against Homophobia\, Biphobia\, and Transphobia\, which falls on May 17 every year. We hold our BBQ a week early because May 17 is a long weekend\, and people tend to go camping and be out of town. \nJoin us on Saturday\, May 10\, 2025 from 11am to 2pm at the Lower Hume Park Picnic Area in New Westminster (by car\, enter where North Road becomes East Columbia Street\, north of Holmes Street; 660 EAST Columbia Street). The park is easily accessible from Braid Skytrain Station and is also serviced by the 109 bus! Just make sure you are navigating to LOWER Hume Park Picnic Area! The walk from Braid Station is about 15 minutes (10 minutes if you’re Gay™ ;). \nWhile the event is technically free\, we have a tradition of collecting donations on-site which are given to Saige Community Food Bank and Rainbow Refugee! Donations are cash only at the event\, and any amount is welcomed! \nPlease RSVP by clicking the “GOING” button near the bottom of the page so we can get a sense of how much food we need! See you there!

SUMMARY:Pink Shirt Day
DESCRIPTION:In 2007 there was an incident of homophobic bullying in a Nova Scotian school. That event spurned kids\, who barely knew the bullied child\, to hand out and wear pink shirts in support of someone new to their school. Since then it’s been taken and brought to the public as a general awareness of bullying. \nOur local union has 4\,000 or so members; we all at some point in our lives have experienced bullying. Be it a sexist comment\, a misogynistic statement\, racism\, transphobia\, homophobia or others. The work to end this is ongoing\, and Pink Shirt Day is a day to show that no\, bullying is not ok and that by wearing the shirt yes\, you are a safe person for someone suffering from it to talk to. \nThe history of Pink Shirt Day: \nIn 2007\, in Berwick\, Nova Scotia\, after a new student at their school was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt\, two grade 12 students bought 50 pink shirts and encouraged their classmates to wear pink. The next day they went to distribute the shirts and to their surprise\, the majority of the students arrived wearing pink! With that act kindness\, Pink Shirt Day was born. \nIn recognition of the Berwick event\, Nova Scotia proclaimed the second Thursday of September “Stand Up Against Bullying Day”. In 2008\, British Columbia proclaimed February 27th to be the provincial anti-bullying day\, and the movement has continued to grow. In 2012\, the United Nations declared May 4th as Anti-Bullying Day\, and now the last Wednesday each February is Canada’s national Pink Shirt / anti-bullying day. \nhttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Shirt_Day \nhttps://www.pinkshirtday.ca/

SUMMARY:Int'l Day of Pink
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Pink is a worldwide anti-bullying and anti-homophobia event held annually during the second week of April. Though similar to Pink Shirt Day (held in February) in that it also seeks to end all bullying\, the Day of Pink is more specifically aimed towards anti-LGBTQ+ bullying. \nThe event was sparked when a gay Canadian high-school student was witnessed by two fellow students as being bullied at their school for wearing a pink shirt. The two students got everyone at their school to wear pink the following day as a gesture of support\, inspiring Jer’s Vision (now Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity) to establish the International Day of Pink.

SUMMARY:Pink Shirt Day
DESCRIPTION:February 28 is Pink Shirt Day. Today we work to end all forms of bullying which includes misogyny\, racism\, homophobia and transphobia. Originally\, Pink Shirt Day started as a result of homophobic bullying at school and has since expanded to fight bullying for any inherent human trait that may make someone different. \nImagine being bullied for the colour and style of your clothes as a child. Or imagine being a member and any minor changes to make you feel safe are met with complaints and vandalism. \nSo what does that mean for us? We’re about 4000 strong with a mix of different people coming from different backgrounds\, making us collectively a diverse force for change. Not just for the membership but also for the community we work in. Wearing your pink shirt today will show that you support the end of bullying. \nHistory: \nIn 2007\, in Berwick Nova Scotia\, after a new student at their school was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt\, two grade 12 students bought 50 pink shirts and encouraged their classmates to wear pink. The next day they went to distribute the shirts and to their surprise\, the majority of students arrived wearing pink!  With that act of kindness\, Pink Shirt Day was born. \nIn recognition of the Berwick event\, Nova Scotia proclaimed the second Thursday of September “Stand Up Against Bullying Day.” In 2008\, British Columbia proclaimed February 27th to be the provincial anti-bullying day\, and the movement has continued to grow. In 2012\, the United Nations declared May 4 as Anti-Bullying Day\, and now the last Wednesday each February is Canada’s national Pink Shirt/anti-bullying day. \nhttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Shirt_Day \nhttps://www.pinkshirtday.ca/ \nUnifor National Statement on Pink Shirt Day: \nhttps://www.unifor.org/news/all-news/pink-shirt-day-2024-statement \nAs we approach February 28\, Pink Shirt Day\, we stand firm in our commitment to fostering communities of respect and inclusivity. \nPink Shirt Day originated from an inspiring act of kindness in 2007 when a group of students in Nova Scotia rallied behind a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Since then\, it has grown into a global movement symbolizing our collective stand against bullying in all its forms. \nThis year\, on February 28th\, we urge all Unifor members to proudly wear pink and join us in standing together against bullying. Each pink shirt worn demonstrates our solidarity and represents an important pledge to actively combat bullying and discrimination wherever it may arise. \nIt’s no secret that some politicians use hate and division to distract from real issues impacting workers and communities. As our union has exemplified in a year of significant stands against power\, when we come together\, we win. We too can unite against bullying by lifting each other\, seeking to better understand one another\, and building workplaces and communities where everyone feels welcomed and included. \nBullying is a pervasive issue that affects individuals of all ages\, backgrounds\, and identities. Whether it occurs in the workplace\, schools\, online\, or within our communities\, its impact can be profound and lasting. By wearing pink on Pink Shirt Day\, we send a powerful message of solidarity that bullying will not be tolerated and that we stand for kindness\, empathy\, and compassion. \nWe encourage all Unifor members to participate in Pink Shirt Day by wearing pink on February 28\, sharing messages of support on social media (tag @UniforCanada on Facebook and Instagram and @UniforTheUnion on X)\, and engaging in activities that promote kindness. On Pink Shirt Day and every day\, let’s do everything we can so love wins. \nPlease send photos of you and your colleagues wearing pink shirts to communications@unifor.org and watch the sea of pink grow on our Unifor Facebook Album.
